Welcome to my website!
ABOUT ME!
Hi, My name is Ya-Chen Hsu, and I come from Taoyuan. I graduated from National Taiwan University (NTU) with a bachelor degree in life science.
Now, I study master degree at National Taiwan University, and majoring life science. I am also learning in the department of mechanical engineering.
My Hobbies
I am a person who likes to be close to nature. And like to explore uncharted territory.
I love being close to animals and I am committed to disseminating people about the importance of animal conservation.
I am also a dog trainer. I train shelter dogs to learn basic skills so they can integrate into human society.
Like increasing adoption rates for dogs or joining a program to guard an orchard.
Besides traveling alone, I also like to travel around with my friends.
research
flight mechanics of three-winged fruits
Introduction
The “soaring ability” of seeds/fruits is highly correlated with their dissemination distance, and also has an important influence on the dispersal of plant genes.
Evolutionarily, different plants adopt different seed dispersal methods. The Dipterocarpaceae plant, the object of this study, is mainly located in the prominent layer (higher than the canopy layer) of tropical forests.
In order to prevent themselves from falling too fast or being intercepted by the canopy around the parent tree, falling seeds have evolved wing-like structures to reduce the falling speed, and allow themselves to disperse farther, riding in the wind, and to suitable habitats for gemination.
free-fall experiments
For experimental design, this study used natural three-winged fruits and artificial three-winged origami fruits to conduct free-fall experiments.
Then, Carefully filmed and photographed by cameras from down and side views. We measure each test’s rotation period and falling speed using the images.
vertical wind tunnel
I designed and built a small vertical wind tunnel to compare the flight mechanics of the three-winged origami fruits in free fall, in order to measure the terminal velocity and record the flight attitude more accurately.
Project
Bone Specimen
This is a bone specimen of a rabbit. This is the animal sacrificed by the Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrate Lab. In this course, we learned about the rabbit's muscular system, as well as the names and functions of the various skeletal structures. In addition to this, we also learned the techniques of making bone specimens.
study skins
There are the rat specimens studied by Mr. Aoki Bunichiro during the Japanese occupation. During his time in Taiwan, Mr. Aoki studied total of 4195 species of mouse stuffed skins. So far these research specimens are collected in the National Taiwan University Zoological Museum. And I was fortunate enough to participate in the work of the specimen inventory. Assisted the museum in inventorying all mouse specimens.
